Gate.io Security and Safety

The 2018 Hack — $234 Million Stolen

The most significant security incident in Gate.io’s history occurred in April 2018 (when operating as Bter.com). North Korean hackers (attributed by ZachXBT and CertiK) stole approximately $234 million worth of cryptocurrency including BTC, ETH, ZEC, DOGE, XRP, LTC, and ETC from hot wallets, per CryptoSlate and DataWallet.

Critical context: On-chain investigator ZachXBT alleged in November 2022 that Gate.io had “kept the hack under wraps” — the exchange never made a full public disclosure of the 2018 incident while its CEO Lin Han publicly promoted Gate.io as one of the safest exchanges, per CryptoSlate.
